Retail : how to maintain consistent standards across every store opening

Whether a store opens in Paris, Lille or Rennes, customers should immediately recognise the brand: a consistent layout, uniform finishes and a familiar atmosphere.
This is the challenge of multi-site retail rollouts: replicating the same standards across premises that are never quite alike, while meeting often demanding opening deadlines.
For expansion managers, store planners and retail directors, every opening involves a deadline, a budget and the reputation of the entire retail network.
The challenge is not simply to open on time. It is to bring very different spaces into line with a shared set of standards, without compromising the brand’s identity.
How can this be achieved? We asked Yann Borvon, our Sales Manager, to share a few insights.

Replicating your brand concept consistently

Your teams have established a store concept, defined brand standards and set a rollout schedule. For a general contractor, the challenge is to implement these requirements accurately at every location, despite differences in layout, existing conditions and technical constraints.
At ECOOR, the detailed scope of works and tender documentation (DCE), covering demolition, partitions, ceilings, flooring, lighting, painting and air conditioning, provide a common reference framework. Colours, layouts and finishes are then adapted to the actual site conditions without compromising the original concept.

“Once we’ve mastered the first store, we know how to replicate the concept as many times as necessary.”
Yann Borvon, Sales & Partnerships Manager at ECOOR

For the projects we manage, our involvement extends to the elements that define the brand’s identity. Furniture and decorative elements, usually supplied by the retailer, are received, stored when necessary and installed by our teams.
We also work with lighting suppliers on precise lighting adjustments, known as focusing, to ensure products are presented in the best possible light. The store is handed over ready for use. All that’s left for you to do is stock the shelves.

Finishing touches: where brand consistency really matters

Two stores can follow identical plans yet create very different impressions. The difference often comes down to details that customers may not consciously notice: consistency in working methods and attention to execution. Painting, which plays a crucial role in brand identity, receives particular attention. A standardised process is applied from one location to the next. This consistency, maintained throughout every store fit-out, protects the identity of the retail network. Wherever customers are, they should immediately recognise the brand’s environment.

The design and estimating department: at the heart of multi-site rollouts

Every project begins with our Design and Estimating Department, which centralises information in a dedicated database for your brand. Once your plans and standards have been integrated, each new store opening can get underway more quickly. The project is then assigned to a Project Manager based on the store’s geographical location. This organisation allows several openings to be managed simultaneously across different regions, while maintaining the same level of quality and attention to detail.

One contract, one point of contact until opening day

Entrusting a commercial fit-out project to a general contractor means no longer having to coordinate multiple trades yourself, with everything covered under a single contract. For a multi-site rollout, the benefits become even greater. Each store opening can progress without your teams having to coordinate a dozen different contractors. That means less time spent on project management and clear accountability through a single point of contact. At ECOOR, you work directly with a dedicated Project Manager who oversees your project from the initial site survey through to handover.

Building a retail network with reliable contractors and compliant premises

A successful rollout also depends on selecting the right contractors.
“We carefully check our subcontractors’ financial stability and insurance coverage, and we do not work with self-employed sole traders. In the event of a dispute, the client must remain protected. These requirements apply to every aspect of the project, whether it’s a floor expansion joint or electrical compliance work required by regulations that evolve regularly. This ongoing technical monitoring, supported by inspection and compliance bodies, enables us to deliver compliant commercial premises across the entire retail network.” Yann Borvon

Anticipating the risks that could delay your opening

In retail, commercial fit-out works generally take between three and six weeks. However, meeting the opening date depends on several factors: coordination between trades, material deliveries, availability of inspection and compliance bodies, site-specific constraints and work carried out by designated contractors, such as sprinkler system installations in shopping centres.
The key is to identify these dependencies early enough to minimise their impact on the schedule.

Keeping budgets under control with a fixed, final price

Replicating a store concept also means ensuring predictable costs. For a single store, a budget overrun may sometimes be absorbed. Across an entire retail network, however, that overrun is multiplied by the number of locations. At ECOOR, we carry out a comprehensive assessment before work begins. This allows us to establish a fixed, final price, providing clear budget visibility before construction starts. For retail directors planning expansion over several financial years, this predictability makes it easier to allocate resources and schedule future openings.

“The contractors in our network are selected for their organisational flexibility and the quality of their work. Their nationwide coverage enables us to support retailers’ opening schedules throughout France while maintaining consistent execution standards.”
Yann Borvon

The larger the network, the more strategic coordination becomes

A first store opening can often be managed internally. Scaling up is a different matter. Managing dozens of openings individually stretches internal teams, extends timelines and puts brand consistency at risk. As the pace of expansion increases, coordination becomes a central challenge. Working with an experienced general contractor provides the organisation, resources and proven methods needed to support nationwide expansion without compromising brand standards.
Planning to open several retail locations ? Let’s discuss your rollout schedule and how to maintain consistent execution standards across every store.

ECOOR : 25 years of retail general contracting experience

Our retail expertise is built on 25 years of experience. Numerous national retail brands have trusted ECOOR with their projects, and many continue to work with us today. Among our long-standing clients is Yves Rocher, whose retail expansion ECOOR has supported for many years, across more than 100 stores.
Other examples include La Casa de las Carcasas, which opened around 20 stores in a single year, and Domino’s Pizza, whose concept was replicated across approximately 10 locations over two years. Different retail networks, one shared objective: maintaining the standards defined by each brand.
ECOOR is currently supporting the Etam Group with the rollout of two retail concepts: Blush by Undiz and Etam Reinvented.
In the healthcare sector, the APRIUM pharmacy group has chosen ECOOR to develop two concepts: UM, designed for pharmacies larger than 350 m², and Concept Regular, intended for smaller pharmacies.

FAQs

The adaptation process begins with a feasibility visit and a detailed assessment of the premises. The detailed scope of works and tender documentation (DCE) shared across the retail network are then adjusted to the site’s specific constraints, including layout, technical installations, access conditions and the existing building. The objective is not to change the concept, but to reproduce its visual identity, layouts and finishes within each individual space.

The retailer provides a detailed scope of works, the tender documentation (DCE) required for construction — covering demolition, partitions, ceilings, flooring, lighting, painting and air conditioning — as well as colour specifications, furniture layouts and any requirements specific to the store concept.

Several stages of a retail fit-out project can be affected by delays. Supply chain disruptions, the availability of inspection and compliance bodies, access restrictions and unexpected conditions discovered on site are among the most common causes. An initial site visit, a shared project schedule, contractors capable of adapting their organisation and, above all, meticulous site supervision enable ECOOR to consistently deliver projects by the agreed deadline.
