Transforming an Attic Space into Four-Star Hotel Rooms in the Heart of Mâcon

Project Background & Objectives

ECOOR delivered the refurbishment of the Hôtel de Bourgogne as part of a project involving the conversion of the attic space into new four-star guest rooms. Carried out in an occupied hotel, the works allowed the establishment to remain fully operational while undertaking a technically demanding transformation of the roof space.
The objective was to modernise the hotel’s accommodation offering while preserving the character and historic identity of the building.

The Client’s Brief

The client wanted to unlock previously unused space by creating new guest rooms that would meet today’s four-star hospitality standards while offering a high level of comfort.
The project aimed to expand the hotel’s accommodation capacity, enhance the guest experience, preserve the building’s character, and carry out the works while the hotel remained fully operational.
The challenge was as much structural as it was architectural.

ECOOR’s Solution

An initial assessment of the building quickly revealed that the existing attic could not be converted in its current condition.
To make the new guest rooms possible, ECOOR managed a major structural reinforcement programme, including the installation of 12-metre load-bearing beams that could not be brought into the building using conventional methods.
The solution required a complex crane lifting operation in the heart of Mâcon, involving a temporary road closure, careful coordination of all activities and comprehensive safety measures throughout the operation.
Once the structure had been reinforced, the entire roof space was reconfigured to create four new four-star guest rooms, designed as a natural extension of the hotel’s identity.

The Outcome

Today, the Hôtel de Bourgogne offers spacious, light-filled guest rooms that blend seamlessly with the character of the original building.
Behind rooms that now feel entirely natural lies a significant structural transformation, largely invisible once the works were completed.
A project where engineering expertise, heritage preservation and guest comfort came together to transform an unused attic into high-quality accommodation.

Project Duration

Two months of works carried out during the hotel’s peak season, transforming the property from demolition through to final finishes, delivered on schedule and in line with ECOOR’s quality standards.
